Gary Neville Criticizes Thomas Tuchel’s Appointment as England Coach: "We Are Damaging Ourselves"
Gary Neville has voiced his strong disapproval over the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as the new England national team manager, arguing that it undermines the progress of English coaching. Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville didn't hold back, stating: "I think we are damaging ourselves. There are outstanding English candidates who could have been appointed."

Neville, a former Manchester United defender and England international, expressed frustration over the continued reliance on foreign coaches. He highlighted a lack of identity and growth within English coaching, adding, "English coaching has one of the worst reputations in Europe – we don’t have a clear identity and have not built a style which is unique to us."

The rise of foreign influence in the Premier League has, according to Neville, hindered the development of a distinct English football philosophy. "We’ve seen coaches from all around Europe come to the Premier League and input their styles in our game, and we’ve copied them," Neville explained. "But in my opinion, we need to build an identity and let English coaches flourish."

Neville's comments suggest that appointing Tuchel is a step backward for the national team. He expressed his disappointment, stating: "I thought we’d left that period [of appointing foreign coaches] behind."

Tuchel, who has a successful track record with clubs like Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, is set to take charge of the England team amidst this controversy. However, Neville’s concerns reflect a broader debate about the future of English football and the need for homegrown managerial talent to thrive.
